Women's Workshops Foster Creativity and Spirituality on Sept 25, 2010
While still basking in the glow of the spirit and energy of the July 24 Multi-Faith Celebration attended by 250 women in Sedona, Judy Massey of St. Andrews Episcopal Church and Teri Bays and Barbara Litrell of St. John Vianney RC Church have organized a day of Women's Workshops, an experiential day when women can connect to the Divine and give expression to their spiritual, creative, compassionate energy.
The workshops will take place Saturday, September 25, 8:30AM to 3:30PM at St. John Vianney,
180 Soldiers Pass Rd, Sedona. The day is designed with 49 workshops across 7 subject areas including Movement/Dance, Food, Art, Meditation, Healing Arts, Music/Poetry/Drama, and Silence. The cost of the day is $25 and includes lunch.
According to TeriBays, "We are pleased that St. John Vianney provides ample indoor space for the workshops as well as breathtakingly beautiful outdoor gardens for meditation and silence."
Movement/Dance workshops include Hatha Yoga, Liturgical Dance, Ayurvedic Yoga, TaiChi and Chakra Yoga. Food Workshops include Ayurvedic Food, Organic Chocolate Making and Break Baking.
Art Workshops feature Pamela Fox-Klauser leading a two part meditative collage experience, gallery owner Andrea Smith leading a two-part painting workshop "Square One," and artist Gloria Rothrock offering a two part workshop on "Stitchery."
City of Sedona grants available for historic preservation
SEDONA CITY GRANTS AVAILABLE FOR HISTORIC PRESERVATION
The Bennett-Purtymun Cabin was built in 1922 by Charles Bennett and Elmer Purtymun for Marvin Bennett on his Grasshopper Flat homestead. The logs were hauled by wagon and team from the Soldiers Wash Basin. In 1963, when the Harmony Hills subdivision was being built, the cabin was moved log by log and reassembled on its current site at the Sedona Charter School. It is Sedona's oldest log cabin.A city funded historic preservation small grant provided matching funds to re-roof the cabin.
The City Council has appropriated $4,000 in fiscal year 2010-11 to implement the fifth year of the Historic Preservation Commission Small Grant Program.These competitive grants will be given to the owners of a designated local landmark property or a structure or site eligible to be a landmark that has been identified in the City's Historic Resource Survey.Over the last four years, 17 grants have been made.The program is intended to be an incentive to designate a property as a local historic landmark.In this regard, five new properties have been designated local historic landmarks thereby helping to preserve Sedona's history.These properties include:The DaVoss Home built in the 1940's; Pushmataha (the KSB offices); the Bennett-Purtymun Cabin built in 1922 and located on the campus of the Sedona Charter School; the Madole-Pony Soldier Home and the Dr. H.H. and Addie Nininger House.Each of these properties has a unique story to tell about the period of time, or the former usage of the property, the residents, or the craftsmanship of the building.
The Small Grant Program offers grants to property owners to rehabilitate, preserve, or restore their properties.This program will provide financial assistance to help owners improve the exterior of historic structures that are located in the City of Sedona, thus improving the overall historic character of the community.
The program reimburses owners on a matching basis up to 50% of the cost for pre-approved work. The awards will be for a minimum of $1000 to a maximum of $4000.
Eligible rehabilitation, restoration, or repair includes but is not limited to:
Roofs
Windows
Doors
Siding
Porches
Foundations
Chimneys
Architectural ornamentation
Masonry re-pointing
Reversal of inappropriate alterations and reconstruction of original architectural elements based on historic documentation
The application and program requirements are available in the Community Development Department at City Hall located at 102 Roadrunner Drive and on the city's website. Completed applications must be received by Thursday, September 30, 2010 and will be reviewed within the following 45 days.All work must be completed by June 1, 2011.Persons interested in this program are encouraged to call Kathy Levin, Associate Planner at 203-5035.A meeting will be scheduled with the interested applicant to determine eligibility before the submission of an application.

Sedona Parks & Recreation dog obedience classes begin in September
Fall will soon arrive and with it comes warm evenings with cool breezes.Enjoy the sunset at Posse Grounds Park with your four-legged best friend.Sedona Parks and Recreation is offering the popular dog obedience classes, with classes starting in September. There are three different types of courses to choose from, all being taught by Instructor Starr Ladehoff who has over 23 years experience training animals.Let Starr help you achieve good communication skills with your family dog.Choose from three options: Mini-Manners, Basic Obedience-Novice, andRecall Workshop-Teach Your Dog to Come to You at All Times.
The Mini-Manners (3 weeks) is designed for those who do not wish to take a full 7-week basic obedience course but want to teach the necessary and most popular commands for a well-mannered dog: loose leash walking, recall (come) and stay.This class will be held on Mondays from 5:00 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. starting September 27 at Posse Grounds Park.Cost is $40 per dog.
Basic Obedience-Novice (7 weeks) is a great opportunity to teach your dog all of the basic commands: heel, sit, sit-stay, down, down-stay recall (come) and stand for examination.For those who want to show their dogs, or for those who want to have a dog that knows several basic commands, this is the course to start with.This class will be held on Mondays from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. starting September 27 at Posse Grounds Park.Cost is $80 per dog.Please do not bring your dog with you the first day of this class.
Every Day & Emergency Recall Workshop (4 weeks) is the beginning to training your dog to come to you no matter what the situation is.This is an accelerated workshop to get you started. The conditioned response may take up to a year to be highly effective but after going through the workshop, you will have all of the tools and knowledge to complete the training.Dogs who have been through obedience class may have quicker results but it is not necessary to take obedience lessons first.This class is held Tuesdays from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. beginning September 21 at Posse Grounds Park. Cost is $60 per dog.

SEDONA, AZ (August 20, 2010) - Is stuff piling up in your garage? Bring those unwanted items to the Community Swap Meet Extravaganza on Saturday, October 16, and forget the hassle of holding your own garage sale.
The event will be held on the upper field at Posse Grounds Park, 525 Posse Ground Road, in Sedona, from 9am-2pm. The Swap Meet (a.k.a. garage sale, flea market, tag sale, etc.) is free and open to the public.
Anyone can reserve a 12' x 15' space for a small fee of $30 ($25 for Sedona Recycles members). All fees are tax-deductible and benefit Sedona Recycles, the Verde Valley's nonprofit recycling center.
The first Sedona Recycles Swap Meet was held in 1989. After a 20-year hiatus, the event was revived last October, and was a huge success! The Swap Meet is now held twice a year, every May and October.
Sedona Recycles also provides free, 24-hour recycling sites in every community in the Verde Valley, as well as specialized recycling services at their processing center in Sedona.
The Swap Meet will feature vendors from all over the Verde Valley as well as a raffle, home-cooked barbecue, and kids' activities. So reserve a space and make the old adage "one man's trash is another's treasure" a reality.

SEDONA- The Sedona Community Foundation is currently seeking nominations for its 2010 Spirit of Sedona Awards, which will recognize an outstanding volunteer, nonprofit organization, business and philanthropist whose efforts support nonprofits in the greater Sedona area.
This year's award recipients will be recognized at SCF's 2010 Spirit of Sedona Awards and Grant Presentation. On behalf of each honoree, SCF will contribute $1,000 to the Sedona nonprofit of his/her choice. SCF will also award grant funding to the recipients of this year's open competitive grant cycle for nonprofits.
Nominees for Volunteer of the Year must have demonstrated outstanding volunteer contributions towards improving the quality of life in the greater Sedona area.
Similarly, the awardee for Nonprofit Organization of the Year must benefit individual welfare and quality of life in the Sedona community. Nonprofit nominees must be a 501(c)(3) organization, public school or municipality in existence for more than five years.
The Business Benefactor of the Year award is open to any Sedona area business noteworthy for its charitable contributions and community efforts.
The Philanthropist of the Year award honors a Sedona area individual or couple distinguished by charitable leadership and caring for humanity.
Last year's honorees included Harvey and Julie Grady (Volunteer), Sedona Adult Community Center (Nonprofit), Sedona Rouge Hotel & Spa (Business Benefactor), and William and Elizabeth Sweeney (Philanthropists of the Year).
City of Sedona pursuing third-party tax collections contract
At the special session of the City Council on Wednesday, August 11, 2010, the City Council directed staff to pursue negotiations with Revenue Discovery Systems regarding third-party sales tax collections on behalf of the City. Presuming initial negotiations are successful, the contract is expected to return to Council for approval on September 14, 2010.
On a related matter, the Council reviewed a proposed draft of the mandatory city business license anticipated as a replacement to the current business registration. The adoption of those code changes in addition to the votes on the related ordinance and resolution are expected to also take place on September 14.
