Women's Workshops Foster Creativity and Spirituality on Sept 25, 2010
While still basking in the glow of the spirit and energy of the July 24 Multi-Faith Celebration attended by 250 women in Sedona, Judy Massey of St. Andrews Episcopal Church and Teri Bays and Barbara Litrell of St. John Vianney RC Church have organized a day of Women's Workshops, an experiential day when women can connect to the Divine and give expression to their spiritual, creative, compassionate energy.

The workshops will take place Saturday, September 25, 8:30AM to 3:30PM at St. John Vianney, 180 Soldiers Pass Rd, Sedona. The day is designed with 49 workshops across 7 subject areas including Movement/Dance, Food, Art, Meditation, Healing Arts, Music/Poetry/Drama, and Silence. The cost of the day is $25 and includes lunch.

According to Teri Bays, "We are pleased that St. John Vianney provides ample indoor space for the workshops as well as breathtakingly beautiful outdoor gardens for meditation and silence."

Movement/Dance workshops include Hatha Yoga, Liturgical Dance, Ayurvedic Yoga, TaiChi and Chakra Yoga. Food Workshops include Ayurvedic Food, Organic Chocolate Making and Break Baking.

Art Workshops feature Pamela Fox-Klauser leading a two part meditative collage experience, gallery owner Andrea Smith leading a two-part painting workshop "Square One," and artist Gloria Rothrock offering a two part workshop on "Stitchery."

Meditation workshops spotlight Guided Visualizations, Insight Meditation, Compassion Meditation, Breathing Meditation, Walking Meditation, Labyrinth Meditation and Guided Meditation.

Healing Arts workshops include Healing Oils, Jin Gin Jytsu Self-Help, Sacred Sound and Blessing Rites & Rituals.

The Music/Poetry/ Drama Workshops will feature Taize Chants, Acting, Poetry, Eastern Chants, and Natural Prayer in Movement.

Silence venues include the Church, the Chapel and the many gardens around St. John Vianney.

Women can design their day as long as space permits.  Reserve early; contact Judy Massey at 282-0073 or judmassey@aol.com.

City of Sedona grants available for historic preservation

SEDONA CITY GRANTS AVAILABLE FOR HISTORIC PRESERVATION

 benett_purtymann_cabin_1922.jpg
The Bennett-Purtymun Cabin was built in 1922 by Charles Bennett and Elmer Purtymun for Marvin Bennett on his Grasshopper Flat homestead. The logs were hauled by wagon and team from the Soldiers Wash Basin. In 1963, when the Harmony Hills subdivision was being built, the cabin was moved log by log and reassembled on its current site at the Sedona Charter School. It is Sedona's oldest log cabin.  A city funded historic preservation small grant provided matching funds to re-roof the cabin.

The City Council has appropriated $4,000 in fiscal year 2010-11 to implement the fifth year of the Historic Preservation Commission Small Grant Program.  These competitive grants will be given to the owners of a designated local landmark property or a structure or site eligible to be a landmark that has been identified in the City's Historic Resource Survey.  Over the last four years, 17 grants have been made.  The program is intended to be an incentive to designate a property as a local historic landmark.  In this regard, five new properties have been designated local historic landmarks thereby helping to preserve Sedona's history.  These properties include:  The DaVoss Home built in the 1940's; Pushmataha (the KSB offices); the Bennett-Purtymun Cabin built in 1922 and located on the campus of the Sedona Charter School; the Madole-Pony Soldier Home and the Dr. H.H. and Addie Nininger House.   Each of these properties has a unique story to tell about the period of time, or the former usage of the property, the residents, or the craftsmanship of the building.

The Small Grant Program offers grants to property owners to rehabilitate, preserve, or restore their properties.  This program will provide financial assistance to help owners improve the exterior of historic structures that are located in the City of Sedona, thus improving the overall historic character of the community.

The program reimburses owners on a matching basis up to 50% of the cost for pre-approved work. The awards will be for a minimum of $1000 to a maximum of $4000.

Eligible rehabilitation, restoration, or repair includes but is not limited to:

  •  Roofs
  • Windows
  •  Doors
  •  Siding
  •  Porches
  •  Foundations
  •  Chimneys
  •  Architectural ornamentation
  •  Masonry re-pointing
  •  Reversal of inappropriate alterations and reconstruction of original architectural elements based on historic documentation

The application and program requirements are available in the Community Development Department at City Hall located at 102 Roadrunner Drive and on the city's website. Completed applications must be received by Thursday, September 30, 2010 and will be reviewed within the following 45 days.  All work must be completed by June 1, 2011.  Persons interested in this program are encouraged to call Kathy Levin, Associate Planner at 203-5035.  A meeting will be scheduled with the interested applicant to determine eligibility before the submission of an application.
