SEDONA CITY GRANTS AVAILABLE FOR HISTORIC PRESERVATION
The Bennett-Purtymun Cabin was built in 1922 by Charles Bennett and Elmer Purtymun for Marvin Bennett on his Grasshopper Flat homestead. The logs were hauled by wagon and team from the Soldiers Wash Basin. In 1963, when the Harmony Hills subdivision was being built, the cabin was moved log by log and reassembled on its current site at the Sedona Charter School. It is Sedona's oldest log cabin.A city funded historic preservation small grant provided matching funds to re-roof the cabin.
The City Council has appropriated $4,000 in fiscal year 2010-11 to implement the fifth year of the Historic Preservation Commission Small Grant Program. These competitive grants will be given to the owners of a designated local landmark property or a structure or site eligible to be a landmark that has been identified in the City's Historic Resource Survey.Over the last four years, 17 grants have been made. The program is intended to be an incentive to designate a property as a local historic landmark. In this regard, five new properties have been designated local historic landmarks thereby helping to preserve Sedona's history. These properties include:The DaVoss Home built in the 1940's; Pushmataha (the KSB offices); the Bennett-Purtymun Cabin built in 1922 and located on the campus of the Sedona Charter School; the Madole-Pony Soldier Home and the Dr. H.H. and Addie Nininger House. Each of these properties has a unique story to tell about the period of time, or the former usage of the property, the residents, or the craftsmanship of the building.
The Small Grant Program offers grants to property owners to rehabilitate, preserve, or restore their properties. This program will provide financial assistance to help owners improve the exterior of historic structures that are located in the City of Sedona, thus improving the overall historic character of the community.
The program reimburses owners on a matching basis up to 50% of the cost for pre-approved work. The awards will be for a minimum of $1000 to a maximum of $4000.
